EMTA Mobile Fare Validator FAQs
What are mobile fare validators?
Mobile fare validators (pictured in the photo)have been placed on all EMTA fixed route ‘e’ buses to record mobile fares purchased with the Token Transit app.
How do they work?
- Download the Token Transit App
- Follow the instruction in this video How to Pay and Ride with Token Transit
- Link your digital wallet or visa/credit card to the account
- Purchase your bus pass
- Once purchased the pass will be stored in your app until it is time to use it.
- Activate the pass when boarding the bus
- Scan the QR code in the glass light box on the Token Transit validator located to the right as the front of the bus.
- Once the validator flashes and beeps, your pass has been accepted.
Do I need to download a new app if I already use Token Transit?
No, your app will automatically update to generate the QR codes for the validators after April 6th.
Will my mobile fare screen look different on my phones?
Yes, mobile fare screens now will have a QR code to “read” by the validator.
When should I start using the validators?
On Monday, April 6th, 2026.
Can I still show my mobile pass to a driver if I don’t want to use the validator?
Please begin using the validators on April 6th. After a brief grace period, no visual validation of mobile fares will be allowed onboard.
What if my pass isn’t accepted?
A red light will indicate your pass is not valid
Can you use a screenshot of the QR code as a pass?
No, the pass is only valid within the app.
Can I buy reduced fare passes on Token Transit?
Yes, reduced fare ride passes and transfers are available. However, you must show the driver your reduced fare card when scanning the pass. The validator will flash blue and make a unique noise to let the driver know to check your reduced fare pass.
Can you send a screenshot of the QR code to another passenger?
No, the QR code automatically updates within the app every ten seconds.
Can I still use cash to buy bus passes?
Yes, the regular farebox has not changed. Please continue to use it as before.
Can you use the digital validators without the Token Transit app?
Yes, however you may only purchase a single ride, $1.65 on a device every 15 minutes. If you need to buy more than one ride, you must download the app to buy passes.
Is Token Transit available on LIFT buses?
No, we have not yet been able to integrate digital fare collection on the LIFT. For information on the diminished balance program, please contact 814.456.2299
